Benzocaine is a cain suffix anesthetic chemical available in powder form. It was first synthesized in 1890 and became available on the market in 1902. Benzocaine is a common oveter-the-counter (OTC) anesthetic and used in many consumer products like cough drops, condoms, ointments and many others. It is one of the most common form of anesthetics used in over-the-counter ointments. Benzocaine has also been used by veterinarians and fish owners to euthanize sick or dying fish.
